Late last week, a package arrived at my doorstep with a cake with the word "Bilibili" on it. I had never heard of it before.
I like some anime, but I wouldn't call myself the biggest fan. I'm such a non-fan of anime that I am proudly on Team Dubs not Subs. That's probably why I wasn't aware of Bilibili's existence before the press kit.
So I gave it a shot, and you know, I'm actually pleasantly surprised!
So, what is Bilibili? What can you actually do on it?
Bilibili has a fairly extensive library of anime - with shows like Spy x Family, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, One Piece, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, among other fantastic titles.
This month, Overlord IV and The Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 2 are coming to the platform.
On top of that, Bilibili also has some exclusive content - stuff you can't find anywhere else. You've got titles like the TOKYO MEW MEW MEW reboot - cute cat girls superheroines with cute transformations, When Will Ayumu Make His Move? - romcom anime that revolve around shogi games, Engage Kiss - two girls and one guy live on an artificial island together, Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth - anime inspired by a video game, Smile of the Arsnotoria the Animation - girl learning wizardry to become a real lady, Extreme Hearts - 3 sporty girls who like basketball, football, and baseball, and TEPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: Laughing ’til You Cry - an aspiring comic and her troupe trying to win a contest.
Here are some really nice features of Bilibili that some streaming services don't have.
- For now, you can start watching for free. If you want access to higher resolutions, that's the only time you have to pay for premium access. Will there be ads in the future? Will there be content locked behind a paywall eventually? Who knows, but for now, it's pay for higher resolutions only.
- There are comments. Bilibili is all about community. Under each episode and video, there is a comment section that lets everyone chime in and discuss the episode.
- You can upload your own content, much like Tiktok or Facebook. Whether you'll be able to monetize your content eventually is unclear at this time.
