So, this is bonkers, yeah? Magic: The Gathering cards have always beenn all about high fantasy. In 1999, Hasbro bought Wizards of the Coast, but only very recently did they start tapping into IP that doesn't necessarily fit into the Magic lore. The Street Fighter and Fortnite crossovers were bonkers and awesome.
In The Brothers' War, Magic is introducing Transformers. Here's the press release:
Wizards of the Coast will release The Brothers’ War, the latest set for the world’s best trading card game, Magic: The Gathering. The second installment to the four-part Phyrexian storyline and the first standard set to incorporate Universes Beyond with Transformers, The Brothers’ War depicts the events of one of the most nostalgic and world-defining moments in Magic’s history. The set contains 287 cards and releases on tabletop on 18 November. Fans from the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia will have the opportunity to receive limited-edition Token collectables when they purchase products from this set.
For fans in the Philippines, if they buy a set worth P5,600 or more, they will get a limited-edition collectible - “Construct” or “Urzan Automaton”. The tokens are the first two of a three-part series set, with varied transparency, of the MTG The Brothers’ War Battlefield Mural. The mural connects to the earlier released set back in September.
I am very much an outsider looking in, but it seems like some hardcore fans aren't happy with the introduction of this new IP. I understand why - the Transformers aren't magical. What do you think, where do you stand on this whole multiversal IP in Magic The Gathering?
