You know what a 3D printer is? Yeah, those things that make things out of... powdery things. I'm not sure how it works exactly, but when I first saw it being demonstrated a few years ago, my first thought was "you can totally make awesome toys with that thing." Every tiny detail can be printed out and that's exactly what Playing Mantis did.
They're a group of budding toy designers and game developers based in the Philippines. I know one of them; does that make me awesome by association? No? Okay.
Anyhoo, they've done some pretty impressive things so far and seriously, they've only just begun. Here's one of their projects and to say it is incredible would be an understatement. Meet Optimus Prime Micro.
You know this guy is micro in size, but how small is he really? And if Optimus is small, how minute is that thing carrying his gun? Also, I may be losing geek points for not knowing what that thing is, so save me by filling me in.
Micro Optimus is, in fact, only about 2 inches tall. Here he is next to Hall of Heroes Flint. What's devastatingly mindblowing about this thing is that IT ACTUALLY TRANSFORMS.
This thing is so insane, it got featured on Super Punch. If your stuff gets featured on Super Punch, it's kind of like winning at the geek Oscars.
Their next project is in its designing stages. They're working on a bike that a 6-7" Marvel Legend character can ride. Can you guess which one?
That's right! Professor X!
Playing Mantis will be showing off these custom toys and more at Toycon 2013. So if you're looking to hook up with guys who can produce whatever custom part you want for whatever custom action figure job you're doing, these are your guys.
