PC gamers get the best toys. Since most of the equipment isn't standardized in terms of quality and specifications, and peripherals come with different specializations, a PC gamer can actually give himself an edge by picking out the most awesome stuff. All that really limits a PC gamer would be his access to finite resources. Yes, the higher end gaming peripherals can cost an arm and a leg, and sometimes a testicle (the good one). It's good to know there are items out there that provide similar performance but at lower cost.
Enter the Mionix Naos 3200 high performance gaming mouse.
Selling at about P2,400-P2,600 only, this mouse gives you control and performance just a few hundred DPI levels shy of the really high end gaming mice. Here's a little video I put together showing the unboxing (or lack thereof), a quick overview of the software and some Modern Warfare 2 footage. I apologize for the crappy audio voice over recording. Next time, I promise to keep the mic farther away from my mouth.
Last week, Sony silently released their official simulated 7.1 headset for the PS3. It was met with great reviews on YouTube. A few days later, these cans made their way to Datablitz. Here's the catch - each branch only got 1 unit! I made my way to the closest Datablitz but I got there a few minutes too late as it was already reserved. They were accepting reservations but they weren't selling the units because they didn't a price in pesos yet.
In the US, they go for $99. At the time of writing, Datablitz has finally released their official price - P3,995! Holy balls that is a goddamn good price! You get P200 off when you pay in cash, so that's about P3,795! Those who were able to reserve are already able to pick up their official PS3 headphones. Yeah, it's only a little pricier than the bluetooth headset, which I bought but barely use. I guess I'll bring that thing to the office and use it to look like a doucher when I take my calls.
It comes with 1 week warranty for replacement, but that's about it. Unfortunately, as of now, Sept. 12, 2011, there are no reports of new stocks. They said they might have some more coming in soon! We'll post a review as soon as we get our grubby, greasy, cheeto-laced hands on it.
The guys over at Microsoft are not being quiet amidst the frenzy that is Modern Warfare 3. Their major announcement was the MW3 XBox 360 console! Okay, this isn't the first time they made a game-inspired console, but this time around, the console comes with special functions and extra hardware!
The bundle comes with two wireless controllers, 320 GB of hard drive space, a copy of MW3 and of course the unit itself, which was given a battle-worn design. Here's what's cool about this - when powering up or ejecting the disc, it plays MW3 sound effects. Pretty cool, yes? Unfortunately, when your unit finally goes 3RL, the MW3 XBox 360 explodes and engulfs you and your loved ones in an 80's action movie style fireball. In the distance, you'll hear someone calling you a noob. Keep out of reach of children.
The rig will cost you approximately $399.00. Dunno how much it'll go for in Php, but you can bet it'd be in the P18,000 - P20,000 range.
A few months back I embarked on a quest to find a pair of kick ass gaming headsets. I was going through reviews of the Tritton AX5 and the Turtlebeach Ear Force. They all seemed to be perfect for the job, except for the fact that I was actually on a ridiculously tight budget. I would never be able to justify 5.1 or 7.1 headsets to myself given the moolah I had to work with.
I then went on a search to find kick ass stereo headsets under Php 2,000. Lo and behold, I was led to the Thermaltake eSports Shock Spin gaming headset!
Here is a video of the unboxing and my first impressions:
Sony threw out some big news on us all in their keynote speech at Gamescom 2011. They officially announced a worldwide PS3 price drop! Booyah! The 160GB model goes down to $250 from $300. The 320GB model goes for $300, and it ships with InFamous 2, which is a fucking good game, by the way. Really - UGC missions that don't suck ass? SOLD!
Now I can confidently say I might give this as a gift sometime in the next 3 years.
Here in the Philippines, we'll likely feel the effects of this price drop in the next couple months. Remember when the 360 dropped their prices and released their slim version? That took about 4 weeks to 6 weeks before we started seeing them on the shelves, yeah? Stores have to get rid of their old stocks first before piling on new ones. The 320GB model, at P42.50/$1 exchange rate, should chime in at Php 12,900. That same unit currently sells at Php 15,500 already at Datablitz, and it drops even further to Php 14,600 if you pay by cash. I'll drop by a Datablitz soon to see how much they'll sell the PS3 when the price drop takes effect.
I don't know about you guys but a price drop has me kind of worried. Are unit sales down? Are they phasing it out? Are we going to hear even more rumors about the PS4? I mean, the PS3 first shipped November of 2006. That was 5 years ago. With the speed at which technology moves, we shouldn't be surprised if the announcement comes sooner rather than later.
