Gamescom just dropped one of the most significant Tekken 8 trailers since its initial announcement!
First off, let's take a look at the trailer:
Let's break down all the info we got from that, shall we?
Character Roster
It's confirmed - there will be 32 characters at launch, with 4 more planned for the first expansion.
Here's everyone who has been officially confirmed - 24 of them. In the new trailer, we see 6 new characters revealed - Leo Kliesen, Steve Fox, Kuma (who's rocking Heihachi's gi), Yoshimitsu, Shaheen, and Sergei Dragunov.
Yes, we've all seen the leaks but we're still missing 8 more official character reveals. Based on the leaks, if they are to be believed, we are still expecting the following characters to be announced officially:
Lee Chaolan
Victor (new character)
Panda
Devil Jin (BOOOO)
Zafina
Feng
Reina (new character, rumored to be related to Heihachi and inherited some of his moves)
Alisa Bosconovitch
Single Player Mode - Arcade Quest
If Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 have taught us anything, it's that single player content truly matters. A fighting game is not as profitable as it could be without appealing to the casual audience, so developers have to make sure there is something there for everyone to enjoy, not just the hardcore competitive players.
Enter Arcade Quest.
Arcade Quest will let you create your own custom character, pretty much like SF6 does, but this time, it's a little more restrictive and cutesy. We won't see abominations of nature running around - also given how it's a single player mode, we won't see anyone else running around for that matter. This isn't Battle Hub. Also, if you think it's just a matter of time before we Bandai Namco sells us $15 skins for this mode, I'm inclined to agree. In fact, right now, the only difference between the Ultimate Edition and the Deluxe Edition is that for an extra $10, you get Avatar Tekken shirts and Avatar skins of Kazuya Mishima, Jin Mishima, and Jun Mishima. It's gonna happen, another TMNT fiasco - I just hope we get something nice.
In this mode, you are going to take on the path of an esports legend in the making. You'll start out your journey at a local arcade and as you get better, you go from arcade to arcade, honing your skills, and facing off against tougher and tougher opponents. I did hear that some of the arcade opponents you'll face are based off of real Tekken pros, and they'll play a lot like them. This seems to be like your journey as a player going pro.
Is this replacing story mode? I don't think so. In the trailer, we see cutscenes that seem to belong to either an arcade ending or narrative cutscenes that provide the story.
Character Customization
Gotta be honest - I love customization in Tekken. I have customs for every character, even those I don't play lol.
You'll be glad to hear that Tekken 8 is going to have some of the most in-depth customization in Tekken history - supposedly, rivaling that of Tekken Tag 2, even though it doesn't seem we can adjust decals anymore. Maybe that's for the best, so Bandai Namco doesn't have to police people making swastikas and dicks all over the place.
In this customization mode, not only can we give our fighters new looks, such as Paul's classic costume, but we also get to be way more granular in customization.
Not only can we change items for the head, face, upper body, lower body, full body, shoes, and some unique character-specific items, but we can also change up locations, sizes, and angles of some accessories. Now that championship belt won't look so awkward on King.
And yes, Lili and Asuka did swap costumes.
